NERC Integrative Residency Program


Clinic Description and History

Steelsmith Natural Health Center was established in Honolulu in 1996 by Laurie
Steelsmith N.D., L.Ac. The goal of our residency program is to help educate,
guide and support new graduates on how to have a successful practices integrating
naturopathic and Chinese medicine. Dr. Steelsmith has primarily been a solo
practitioner since 1996, and opened up her practice for training new graduates
two years ago. To accommodate the additional staff, Steelsmith Natural Health
Center recently opened a 1,500 square-foot office that includes 5 treatment rooms, a
pharmacy, and a public speaking room.

With 17 years of practice, a best-selling book, and a column in Hawaii痴 statewide
newspaper for 10 years, Dr. Steelsmith has built a successful practice that continues
to grow. Although she specializes in women痴 health, the clinic attracts male
and female patients from all walks of life. Her residents have been able to choose
what kinds of patients and conditions they are most interested in, and develop
their skills accordingly. In addition, preceptor sites are being developed that
will help them continue to learn and build bridges with the medical community.


CNME Approved Remote Residency Site

Steelsmith Natural Health Center is accepted as an official, accredited residency
site of Bastyr University. We currently have a second-year resident, and have hired
a first-year resident for 2010-2011. We will be accepting one first-year resident and
continuing to employ one second- year resident on annual basis in partnership with
Bastyr痴 Remote Site Residency program.

Residents will have the opportunity to see a wide variety of patients, both with Dr.
Steelsmith and privately. Their schedules will include preceptor hours with local
medical doctors, monthly presentations, public outreach, writing, and research.


Program Structure

The residency program is structured as follows:
• Direct patient care in a clinic that integrates naturopathic and Chinese medicine
• Weekly conferencing and mentoring with Dr. Steelsmith
• Preceptor hours with selected specialty practitioners
• Development of marketing skills, public lectures, participating in
   clinic newsletters, research and article writing
• Assisting Dr. Steelsmith in patient care


Program Goals and Development

The goal of Steelsmith Natural Health Center is to provide our patients and community
with the highest quality natural health care from both a naturopathic and Chinese
medicine perspective. We are also dedicated to providing recent graduates with
an opportunity to learn how to integrate what they have learned in school with the
experience of a practitioner who has been in practice for many years. We think it is
imperative that new graduates learn how to run a successful business, so that they can
be successful wherever they establish themselves.
